He heard a popping sound, saw flames, and somehow knew he needed to throw himself across the aisle and tackle the guy. He pulled the burning thing from in between the guy’s legs and extinguished it with his hands, pulled the guy up to the front of the plane, ripped off his clothes to make sure he didn’t have more explosives, and handcuffed him.
People sometimes ask what talent you wish you had. I would like to be like Jasper Schuringa: not only calm in a crisis, but courageous enough to act. I wonder if he wondered, as I did after 9/11, what he would have done if he’d been on one of those planes.
