Jasper Schuringa is about to get a lot more friends

He heard a popping sound, saw flames, and somehow knew he needed to throw himself across the aisle and tackle the guy. He pulled the burning thing from in between the guy’s legs and extinguished it with his hands, pulled the guy up to the front of the plane, ripped off his clothes to make sure he didn’t have more explosives, and handcuffed him.

People sometimes ask what talent you wish you had. I would like to be like Jasper Schuringa: not only calm in a crisis, but courageous enough to act. I wonder if he wondered, as I did after 9/11, what he would have done if he’d been on one of those planes.

And here’s the most amazing thing about Jasper Schuringa: he has only seven Facebook friends.

We assume you are referring to Flight 77, the plane that had no airphones, and so Barbara Olsen was forced to use her cell phone; is that one of the planes you were wondering about?

No. After 9/11 I just kept wondering if I’d been one of the passengers, on any one of the planes, who saw people acting suspiciously, if I would have had the presence of mind, courage, calmness, and propensity to action that Schruringa did this time.
