St. Brendan the Navigator

According to The Voyage of St. Brendan, written by a medieval Irish monk, Brendan had quite a time when he set out in his leather boat from sixth-century Ireland to find the Promised Land. He met St. Patrick and even Judas Iscariot, who was hanging on to a rock after a temporary reprieve from Hell. He celebrated Easter on a whale’s back, and maybe even discovered North America.

Supposedly Columbus consulted Brendan’s map, which makes you think Columbus was pretty lucky to ever get here.
