So according to the Dalai Lama, the purpose of life is to be happy. I’ve been thinking that, for the purpose of life, this is awfully simplistic (and feeling guilty for even questioning the teachings of someone so learned), until I remembered reincarnation.

I love the idea of reincarnation. It makes total sense, the way it conforms to the laws of physics, what little I know of them; and the way it dictates how to live one’s life – with love and compassion, as the Dalai Lama says.

If I had grown up believing in reincarnation, instead of heaven and hell and mortal sin and confession (this is where all the guilt comes from), I’d still be a believer instead of the cynical questioner I am now. I think I’m going to work on this.
